The Brazilian captain had joined the Catalan club from his previous club Santos back in 2013. The fee at the time seemed to be €57.3m (£48.4m). However, according to Susana Monje, the actual transfer fee was remarkably lower.
Barcelona’s vice-president has revealed that the club only paid €19.3m (£16.3m) for such a great player. Blackburn Rovers, meanwhile had received €19.5m (£16.5m) from Manchester United for Jones in 2011.
“Originally, the cost of the signing was €57.3 million (R903 million), plus the €2 million (R31.5 million) Ballon d’Or bonus,” she said, according to Marca.
“After the agreement with the public prosecutor’s office, we have to remove €40 million (R630 million) of the payout and categorise it as a salary.
“The cost of the transfer, therefore, is €19.3 million (R304 million), plus €24 million (R378 million) gross salary per season.
“I would like to congratulate those who devised the operation and to congratulate the player for deciding to sign for Barcelona.
“Taking into account the player Neymar is, the deal is clearly below market value.”
Neymar is still young. But with a big wage comes even greater responsibility. Eventually he had agreed to a new deal with Barcelona. It means the pressure will be on him to perform consistently at a rather brilliant level this season and beyond. If that means he has to slow down off the field then that is a rather unfortunate side-effect he will have to cope with.
It appeared, shortly after the Brazilian’s move was final, that Barca lied to the public about the transfer fee of the player.
