After just 14 seconds into the semi-final against Honduras at the Rio Olympics, the striker found the back of the net. Honduras had the kick-off, and they played it safely back to their defence. But unfortunately for them, Neymar and the Brazilians pressed rather high to win possession back immediately.
It was a dream start for Brazil. And fittingly, its biggest star was there in the middle of the moment. Under pressure, Honduras’ centre-back misjudged his touch, with the Barcelona striker charging furiously at him.
Neymar shimmied, won the ball in style, and poked the ball past the charging keeper into the empty net. The Maracana exploded into chanting despite Neymar seemingly hurt from the collision. He was immediately stretchered off to the collective gasps of the host nation. Although, he was back in action shortly.
Brazil are out to win their first ever Olympic gold medal and they seem competent. They also are looking to make amends for a futile World Cup campaign in 2014. They were bundled out in the semi-finals with a 7-1 thrashing by Germany.
Neymar had been injured in the quarter-finals and he was missing on that fateful day. Today as well, Neymar got the worst of the collision and had stayed on the ground. Even his being stretchered off the field caused shiver. But things seemed brighter as soon as he was brought across the touchline. Maracana cheered when Neymar ran confidently to the center line and re-entered the game.
The goal is the quickest in Olympic history. Canada’s women’s team had earlier held that stunning record with their goal against the Matildas in Rio.
