The Brazil star was on the wrong end of a poor challenge from Camilo Zuniga. It was in his team’s quarter-final victory over Colombia The clash left him with a fractured vertebrae.

It ended the Barcelona forward’s tournament on home ground. Brazil went on to be humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the semi-final in Belo Horizonte.

Looking back on the unfortunate incident, Neymar told La Gazzetta dello Sport: ‘I have had a number of difficult moments in my career, but what happened during the World Cup in Brazil is the most painful.

‘It was my childhood dream to become world champion on home soil, but it all went wrong because of an injury that could have forced me to leave football altogether.

‘That was a really difficult week for me. Fortunately I was close to my friends and family. It’s important to be able to call on the help of your beloved ones in a moment like that.’

Under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, Brazil had progressed to the latter stages of their own World Cup. But back in 2014 things fell apart after Neymar’s injury.

Meanwhile, one of their star attackers joined the suspended Thiago Silva on the sidelines in the form of Neymar. And for the last-four tie with Germany, Brazil were embarrassed with 7-1 result. It was one of the worst results in the country’s history.

Germany scored five goals inside only half an hour on their way to winning the tournament rather in style.

Their success was in direct contrast to Brazi’s shocking decline in form. It had also seen them beaten 3-0 by Holland in the third-placed play-off clash.
