FC Barcelona and Real Madrid
the great football rivalry

Once again, the footballing world will seem to stop on Saturday to witness the immortal duel between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. It will be their 231st meeting for (232nd if you count their first meeting in 1902 Copa de la Coronacion match which Barca won 3-1, but Spanish FA doesn’t recognize it as an official competition). Although the current table situation doesn’t really build for an exciting season closing encounter of today, one must never underestimate Madrid and power of such crucial derby matches.

Moreover, Madrid fans and footballers have to necessarily believe they are still in the race for the title itself. Gareth Bale was clear on that topic, stating his side will effectively re-enter the competition race if they could grab a win at the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid encounter. However, the required task will be all but easy for Los Blancos, as Barcelona’s numbers look amazing and absolutely impressive this year.

Their last defeat in all sort of competitions came in October last year when they were defeated by Sevilla. Since then, Barcelona form has gone up by a country mile greater, as they made a nine point difference in La Liga ahead of Atletico Madrid and propelled themselves to the Copa del Rey final by absolutely rampaging Valencia. In Europe they defeated Arsenal to secure their UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals spot. Luis Enrique’s squad looks unarguably set to defend all their trophies, but El Clásico is ‘the match’ where everything could go horribly wrong if they’re not wary.
