Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid came face to face for the much awaited Champions League final in Milan on 27th May, 2016. Real Madrid went into the match looking for their 11th European Cup, while Atletico sought their first. This was Real’s 14th appearance in the final, and Atletico’s 3rd, and the two teams faced each other once before in 2014, when Real Madrid took the title. Naturally, the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid clash in the 2016 Champions League final brought with it an air of anticipation and tension.

The match began a few minutes later than expected, amid an incredible atmosphere in Milan. It was a cagey start, as both teams attempted to settle. Atletico made some ground down the right, but Saul couldn’t squeeze a cross into the box. Real resumed with the possession. Atletico saw its first half-chance in the 6th min, as Koke met a loose ball inside the Los Blancos box, but Navas made a comfortable save. This was followed by a stunning attempt by Casemiro, but Oblak made a stunning save!

Atletico’s defence seemed to be under pressure by the time the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid match reached the 10th min, with Bale and Ronaldo were fired up. Real forced another corner as Kroos’ strike got blocked by Savic. The match soon picked pace. Carvajal absolutely flattened Griezmann, and he got booked, in the 11th min. Saul threatened to release a strike inside the Real box, after driving past Kroos. But Navas claimed the vital moment.

It was understandable that the first goal would be crucial, and in the 16th min, Kroos’ free kick got flicked on by Bale. Ramos was on hand to poke home from close range, and Real Madrid took the lead! There was a slight hint of offside about the goal, but the linesman kept his flag down, leaving Real in the lead. Real’s attack strengthened, and in the 25th min, a half-chance came for Atletico, but Juanfran missed the target from distance.

It seemed that Atletico was just unable to get into the game. The 2016 Champions League final reached crossed the first half an hour, with Oblak forced to get down and make another smart save from Benzema. His effort hit the post. Real Madrid was definitely the threat in this match. Navas made a super save 5 min later, keeping out a volley from Griezmann. Atletico began enjoying more possession, but Real Madrid are dropping back, looking comfortable at the back. Torres came deep to get the ball, and Real cleared again.

About 3 min before the first half, Griezmann went for Atletico again, but his low strike was wide of the post. An extra min was played at the end of the first half, and the scoreboard read Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid.

The second half of the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid clash in 2016 Champions League final. In the 47th min, Pepe bundled Torres to the ground, and helped Atletico earn a penalty shot. Navas got booked for delaying the spot kick, before Griezmann made an attempt at the shot; but unfortunately, he fired at the crossbar, missing an obvious chance to score! However, Atletico seemed to be taking the front foot, with Juanfran delivering a terrific cross to the post, but Danilo did enough to head behind.

In the 55th min, Savic poked wide of the Real post, as Atletico threatened again. This was followed by Bale striking wide of Oblak’s left-hand post, as Real launched a quick counter attack. With 30 min left of the match, Atletico came close, again, as Koke struck one towards the top corner, but his effort again went wide of the post. Another chance came in the way of the team, as Torres managed to deliver a super cross into Saul, but his volley was again wide of the post.

Real was putting up little show at this time. In the 61st min, Torres got booked for a late challenge on Ramos. 5 min later, Danilo broke down the right and delivered a cross into Benzema, but Godin brought Ronaldo to the deck. Bale struck again after a few min, but his effort hit the wall and went behind for a corner. 20 min before the end of the match, Ronaldo skippered away from Savic, and broke into the opponent’s box, but Godin made a challenge. Real evtually managed to clear the danger to Bale, who made ground down the right.

In the 71st min of the Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid match, Oblak made another super save to block Benzema. With a little less than 15 min left of the match, Real introduced Vasquez to the field, in place of Benzema. In the 79th min, Oblak kept out a strike by Ronaldo. With just 10 min left of the match, Carrasco bundled a Juanfran cross home from inside the box, scoring an equalizer quite late in the course of the match!

Obviously, Real was left in a shock, and Torres went into another half-chance, but it was wide of the post. 5 min before the match, Oblak blocked an effort from Bale. Ronaldo looked extremely frustrated. Marcelo’s excellent delivery had no takers, and his effort fell through. Real made another food effort in the last min, but Oblak contested the pressure well. At the end of the 90 min, 3 min were added, during which Ramos and Gabi got booked. At the end of the additional minutes, the scoreboard read Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid. This led to the extra-time to decide the fate of the 2016 Champions League final.

In the 3rd Extra Min, Danilo got booked for a late challenge on Carrasco. In the 4th min, Bale hit one over the crossbar, as Real threatened on the counter once again. A chance came in the way of Real as Ronaldo had a free header inside the Atletico box. But, Oblak made a save, leaving Ronaldo in tears of frustration. Atletico kept possession outside the Real box, and eventually, Danilo was forced to head behind, as Juanfran looked to pick out the head of Carrasco. Real seemed to lack the energy to match Atletico. In the 12th extra min, Bale had a powerful strike blocked as Real Madrid threatened on the counter following a great effort by Isco.

As both the teams made their best efforts, Real maintained a good spell of pressure. Carrasco ran the show for his team, and his strike got blocked for a corner after he got singled by his opponents together. Half time for extra time arrived, with the scoreboard reading Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid. The second half of the extra time began, with Casemiro working an opening outside the Atletico box, but his effort was too high. Griezmann cleared his box with a superb header, and in the 22nd extra min, Pepe got booked for a late challenge on Gabi.

Bale did everything possible to stay on the field, and continued to hobble around. The minutes went by, with little to report. Hernandez got across to block Vasquez who saw the whites of the net inside the opponent box. At the end of the extra time, the score still remained 1-1. This led the match to the penalty shootout, to seal the fate of the match.

Vasquez and Griezmann scored the first penalty shots for the two teams, so did Marcelo and Gabi in the second round, and Bale and Saul in the 3rd. In the 4th round, Juanfran missed the hit, as opposed to Ramos, and Atletico was left one penalty score behind. Finally, Ronaldo sent the 5th penalty shot into the box, rendering the fifth penalty shot of Atletico redundant, and winning the match for Real Madrid. The scoreboard read Real Madrid 5-3 Atletico Madrid. Real won their 11th European Cup, after a neck-to-neck fight between the two rivals.
